Insurance Coverage for DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction

Diep Flap Breast Reconstruction in NJ and NYDoes health insurance cover breast reconstruction?

YES!

The Women’s Health and Cancer Right Act, signed in 1998, is a federal law that mandates coverage for breast cancer care.

This includes:

  1. Reconstruction of the breast removed by mastectomy with a breast implant or a DIEP flap. This reconstructive surgery can occur either immediately during the same surgery as the mastectomy or at another time, known as a “delayed” reconstruction.
  2. Reconstruction of the other breast to make the breasts look symmetrical after mastectomy.
  3. Any physical complications at all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema (fluid build-up in the arm and chest on the side of the surgery).

Does health insurance cover revision of my breast reconstruction, like switching from breast implants to a breast flap?

YES!

Any revision procedure related to either the breast with cancer or the opposite side is covered by health insurance. This includes switching one or both sides from a breast implant to a DIEP flap.
