Fat Grafting in New Jersey

Depending on your goals and your breast shape, fat grafting is another technique we can use to make your breasts larger. Using this technique, we perform liposuction on a different portion of your body, like your tummy, thighs or waist, process the fat and then inject it into your breasts. This works best in patients who would like the breasts to be slightly larger or would like to combine this with an implant for a more natural look with the volume a breast implant provides.

    What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses your own body fat to enhance or reconstruct different areas of your body.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Fat Harvesting: Fat is removed from areas with excess fat, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, or back, using liposuction.
    • Processing: The harvested fat is purified to remove impurities and prepare it for transfer.
    • Fat Injection: The purified fat is then injected into the desired area, such as the face, breasts, buttocks, or other body parts, to add volume and contour.

Fat transfer can provide a natural-looking enhancement and is often used for facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and buttock enhancement. It can also help repair scars and improve the appearance of areas affected by aging or trauma.

    Benefits of Fat Grafting

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, offers several benefits for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes:

    • Natural Results: Using your own body fat provides a more natural look and feel compared to synthetic fillers or implants.
    • Dual Benefits: The procedure combines liposuction and augmentation, allowing for contouring of donor areas like the abdomen or thighs while enhancing the target area.
    • Long-Lasting Effects: Once the fat cells establish a blood supply in the new location, they can provide permanent results.
    • Minimal Rejection Risk: Since the fat comes from your own body, there is a lower risk of allergic reactions or rejection.
    • Improved Scarring: Fat grafting can help improve the appearance of scars by adding volume and promoting healing.
    • Versatility: It can be used in various areas, including the face, breasts, buttocks, hands, and even scars.

Who is a Candidate for a Fat Transfer?

Candidates for a fat transfer typically include individuals who:

    • Seek Natural Enhancement: Prefer using their own body fat over synthetic fillers or implants for augmentation.
    • Have Adequate Donor Fat: Possess enough excess fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, or hips to be harvested and transferred.
    • Desire Dual Benefits: Want to contour specific areas (e.g., liposuction) while enhancing others (e.g., face, breasts, buttocks).
    • Non-Smokers: Smoking can impair healing and affect the success of the procedure.
    • Physically Healthy: Good overall health and stable weight are important for a successful outcome.
    • Realistic Expectations: Understand the potential results and limitations of the procedure.

What to Expect After Fat Grafting

After a fat grafting procedure, you can expect a multi-stage recovery process. Immediately following the surgery, you might experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort at both the donor and recipient sites. Your plastic surgeon will provide detailed instructions for managing any pain and caring for your incisions.

It’s common to need to wear compression garments on the donor site. These help reduce swelling and support the healing process. Resting and avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks is crucial for recovery. Your surgeon will guide you on when it’s safe to resume light activities.

Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are essential to monitor your progress and ensure that everything is healing well. Over the next few weeks to months, the swelling will gradually subside, revealing the final results of the procedure. Typically, it takes about three to six months to see the complete outcome as the transferred fat cells establish a blood supply and integrate into the surrounding tissues.
Following your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions closely is key to achieving the best possible results.
