    What is Breast Reduction?

Doctors at Rowe Plastic Surgery are board-certified plastic surgeons based in New Jersey and specialize in breast procedures. We accept most insurance. Medical breast reduction can be performed with a variety of different techniques. Our skilled plastic surgeons prefer to use the short-scar breast reduction technique. The short-scar technique, also known as the “lollipop incision,” is a novel method that can give better results than older methods with fewer and smaller scars. The short-scar technique reduces visible scars and recovery time from mammoplasty.

The short-scar technique uses a “lollipop” incision — a circle around the nipple with a vertical line down the lower part of the breast. It’s designed to minimize scarring while still giving great results. This allows your surgeon to reduce the size of the breast while giving you a natural and more youthful breast shape. Feeling and function of the nipple usually remains the same as it was prior to your procedure when this technique is used. The size of the areola can also be reduced to match the size of the reduced breasts.

The incisions will be carefully applied and discreetly hidden among the contours of the breasts.

During your procedure, your doctor will remove glandular tissue and tighten skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in better proportion to the rest of your body. Reducing the size of your breasts is usually performed in an outpatient or ambulatory setting.

The surgery is done under general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours from start to finish. After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in a special bandage or surgical bra to help with healing. Some patients also go home with small drainage tubes to keep fluid from building up. The average recovery time is about one week and is relatively pain-free. Any discomfort experienced after surgery is easily controlled with oral pain relief medication. The stitches are removed after a week of recovery time and most women can return to their normal routine within about ten days of their boob reduction surgery, but the surgical bra should be worn for about a month after the surgery. Take it easy after surgery — no heavy lifting for about 3 to 4 weeks, and limit contact with breasts to very gentle contact for up to six weeks.

If you’re currently breastfeeding or planning to in the future, medical breast reduction may not be the best option — the procedure can affect the milk ducts that are needed for nursing. Although occurrences are rare, the risks associated with breast reductions include bleeding, infection, reaction to anesthesia, small sores around the nipples, slightly mismatched breasts or slightly uneven nipple placement, and loss of feeling in the nipple and/or breast.

Breast Reduction Surgery: Effectiveness & Satisfaction Rate

Most people who’ve had breast reduction will tell you — it was worth it. A large review of 95 studies involving over 9,700 patients found that about 90% were happy with their outcome. These studies used the BREAST-Q, a trusted tool that measures how patients feel after breast surgery — including physical, emotional, and sexual well-being.

    – A systematic review of patient reported outcome measures for women with macromastia who have undergone breast reduction surgery. Pubmed. 2019.

More recent research supports those findings. In a 2023 study, 94% of patients said they were either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their breast reduction. These positive feelings held strong even six years later, showing long-term improvements in both comfort and quality of life.

    – Long-term outcomes of breast reduction surgery: A prospective cohort study. 2023.

Another study from 2021 found that nearly 90% of patients were satisfied with their results — and that satisfaction was even higher in those who felt well-informed before surgery.

How to Prepare for Breast Reduction?

If you’re thinking about mammaplasty, the first step is setting up a consultation with one of our surgeons. That’s where you’ll talk through your goals, ask questions, and share any health conditions or medications you’re currently taking. From there, your surgeon will walk you through the best approach based on your needs and body type.

Before surgery, we’ll give you a clear checklist to help you get ready and set yourself up for a smooth recovery. Some of the most helpful steps to prepare for mammaplasty include:

    • Getting some regular movement in to improve your overall health
    • Eating well — your body heals better when it’s well-nourished
    • Quitting smoking (as early as possible) to lower risks
    • Cutting back on alcohol to avoid issues with anesthesia or healing
    • Prepping a cozy space at home where you can rest comfortably
    • Making sure someone can help you out the first few days
    • Finding ways to de-stress — even deep breathing can help ease nerves

After mammaplasty in NJ, take it easy. You’ll need to hold off on intense workouts and heavy lifting for a few weeks. Your doctor will give you a recovery timeline so you know what to expect and when.

Also, be ready to do a little wardrobe refresh. Your old bras, tops, or jackets may not fit quite the same — and that’s a good thing. Give yourself some time to adjust to the changes. Most people find the physical and emotional relief is more than worth it.

    Breast Reduction Vs. Breast Lift

Breast lift and mammoplasty surgery in NJ are often performed together, but they serve different purposes. A breast reduction removes excess tissue to reduce size, while a breast lift repositions the nipple and tightens the skin without removing tissue. Both procedures involve similar techniques, including moving the nipple and areola to a higher position and removing excess skin for a more lifted appearance. Incisions are typically made around the areola and vertically down to the breast base, sometimes extending horizontally for larger reductions.

Recovery for both surgeries is minimal, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few days and wearing a sports bra for three weeks. Scars heal well, often becoming barely noticeable over time. Both procedures provide long-lasting, satisfying results.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

Breast reduction costs can vary quite a bit because everyone’s body and goals are different. During your personal consultation at Rowe Plastic Surgery, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will review your medical history, talk with you about what you hope to achieve, and do a physical exam to evaluate your breast size, skin tone, and nipple position. From there, they’ll explain your options, go over what the surgery involves, and answer all your questions — including the risks, recovery, and what results you can expect.

Once your surgeon has helped map out the right approach for your body, you’ll meet with our surgical coordinator to talk through the next steps and get a clear breakdown of costs. In general, breast reduction surgery in New Jersey can range from $15,000 to $25,000.

    That range typically includes:

    • Surgeon’s fee: $12,500 to $17,000
    • Anesthesia and operating room costs: Around $3,000
    • Facility fees: These vary depending on whether your procedure is done in a private surgical center or outpatient hospital

What affects the final cost? A few things like the complexity of your surgery, where it’s performed, how long it takes, and your surgeon’s experience. Our team will walk you through all of that during your visit so there are no surprises.

Also, if your breast reduction is medically necessary — like if you’re dealing with back or shoulder pain — it might be covered by insurance. Here is more detailed information about the cost of breast reduction and the factors affecting it. However, the best way to get an accurate cost estimate is to come in for a consultation. We’re here to help you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

*The price range is based on the national average for Breast Reduction Surgery and is not specific to Rowe Plastic Surgery.

What Are the Most Common Problems After Breast Reduction Surgery?

There is always a minor risk of problems with every surgical procedure. Some of the risks related to breast reduction include:

    • Loss of nipple-areola sensation
    • Scarring or asymmetry
    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Delayed wound healing
    • Poor reaction to anesthesia
    • Nerve damage
    • Fluid accumulation
    • Skin discoloration
    • Nipple or skin loss

You should also be aware that your ability to breastfeed may be limited and that changes in your body throughout pregnancy may affect the outcome. However, keep in mind that most patients do not have major complications, and Rowe Plastic Surgery team works hard to reduce these risks with superior anatomy knowledge, rigorous preoperative planning, delicate tissue handling, and anticipatory post-operative care.
