Hair Restoration

Hair loss or thinning affects over 80 million Americans.  Almost 2/3 of men by age 35 and over 50% of women will experience some hair loss.  Hair loss can be caused by a variety of issues including heredity, stress, hormones, medications, and other factors.  Balding or thinning hair can affect your self-confidence and make you look or feel older than your natural age.

Hair restoration takes a personal and often a multi-faceted approach. Our Rowe Plastic Surgery doctors will help design a treatment plan for you in whatever stage of hair loss you may be experiencing.

Hair Treatment Options

All patients will undergo a thorough evaluation of current medications and potential reasons for their hair loss in an attempt to address the underlying causes of the problem.  Prevention and early treatment are critical to a great result.

Early stage thinning hair

This includes patients who have just started to notice some thinning, but still have hair.  These patients are good candidates for non-surgical hair restoration.  Non-surgical options include laser light therapies that have been shown to help with thinning hair as well as various medications and topical options.

Advanced early stage hair loss

These patients are those that have noticed their hair loss progressing, and/or may have tried some of the other options with or without success.  These patients are great candidates for treatment with platelet rich plasma (PRP).  With this technique, a small amount of blood is drawn from your arm.  The blood is then placed in a centrifuge to help the blood separate into its component parts.  The concentrated platelet portion of the plasma is then withdrawn.  After some numbing medication, the PRP is then injected into your scalp to stimulate the hair follicles to produce natural growth.  Typically patients will need 3 to 4 treatments a month apart and can begin to notice results around 4-6 months after treatment.

Advanced hair loss

Pts with noticeable hair loss or balding are best treated with hair transplantation.  Contemporary solutions to hair transplantation include primarily a follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique.  This technique involves removing follicles of hair from one area of the scalp and transplanting them in the balding areas.  It can be performed on women as well as men.  The advantages of FUE include a much more natural look without the significant donor site scar noted with the strip extraction technique as well as minimal down time.
