RESTORE YOUR CONFIDENCE AND RETURN TO A BODY THAT FEELS LIKE YOU FOLLOWING A MASTECTOMYGet Natural Breasts
with DIEP Flap Surgery
Breast cancer strikes one in every eight American women, and a mastectomy is often necessary to eliminate the disease, which involves the removal of one or both breasts. While a mastectomy is a life-saving procedure, it can have a major physical and emotional impact on a woman. DIEP flap surgery is an innovative technique that not only reconstructs the breasts, but utilizes your own tissue, resulting in natural and long-lasting results.
Breast reconstruction surgery offers two options: implant-based reconstruction or autologous reconstruction using your own tissue. The DIEP flap, which stands for deep inferior epigastric perforator flap, is a type of autologous reconstruction that involves taking tissue from the abdomen and transferring it to the chest. This provides a natural breast and can also balance the body’s proportions. Because the procedure involves using your own tissue, the new results look and feel like your own body - unlike an implant, which can feel stiff, cold, or firm.
Natural
LONG-LASTING RESULTS
DIEP flap surgery is designed to give you natural results that last for many years with minimal maintenance. With this revolutionary surgery, you can get a natural breast that feels just like the rest of your body - soft, warm, and without the stiffness or firmness of an implant.
Reduced
RISK OF COMPLICATIONS
The DIEP flap procedure has been found to have a lower risk of complications compared to other surgeries, making it an ideal choice for those who want a safe and reliable solution. Since there are no foreign objects in your body as there would be with implant-based reconstruction, the risk of infection and rejection is reduced.
Improved
ABDOMINAL EFFECTS
The DIEP flap procedure not only gives you a natural breast but also improves the contours and appearance of your abdominal area. During the surgery, fat and skin from your abdomen are used to create the new breast, giving your abdomen a slimmer and more sculpted look, similar to the results of a tummy tuck.
Enhanced
QUALITY OF LIFE
With DIEP flap surgery, you can get a natural breast that feels just like the rest of your body. This can help enhance your quality of life by restoring your sense of self. Our experienced team of surgeons is here to provide you with the best possible care so you can get the results you want and deserve.

Generally, candidates for DIEP flap surgery include individuals who desire a natural and feeling breast reconstruction using their own tissue. This surgical technique is particularly suitable for women who have enough excess abdominal tissue, as it utilizes the skin and fat from the lower abdomen (similar to a tummy tuck) to reconstruct the breast mound. Patients should be in good overall health and have adequate blood supply to the abdominal area.
For more women, DIEP flap surgery recovery takes between six and eight weeks. You can expect pain, swelling, and soreness on your lower abdomen and breasts immediately after the surgery and for several days, as well as difficulties standing or sitting because of abdominal incisions for several weeks. Your cosmetic surgeon may fix drains in the breast site and abdominal area to keep excess fluids away from the incisions to aid healing. You may need a compression girdle for up to eight weeks after surgery to promote healing. You should avoid strenuous activities that can slow down healing, and avoid heavy lifting and sexual activities for about six months.
During the DIEP flap procedure, your plastic surgeon makes an incision across your lower abdomen. The surgeon removes a flap of skin which includes fat and blood vessels, but leaves your abdominal muscles intact. Then your plastic surgeon attaches the transplanted tissue to your chest’s blood supply. Using the DIEP flap, your plastic surgeon recreates a breast mound on your chest. For a single mastectomy, the surgeon matches the new breast to the remaining one. After the breast reconstruction is set, the surgeon stitches the incisions in your abdomen and on the new breast.
Studies on DIEP flap vs. implants show higher satisfaction levels with DIEP flap surgery. An implant’s lifespan is 10 to 20 years, while DIEP flap results last a lifetime.
Some patients may see results similar to those of a tummy tuck, like toning and tightening.
Yes! When you undergo DIEP flap surgery, Dr. Schneider connects the nerve in the flap to the nerve in your chest, which can result in a breast or nipple that has a sensation.
Insurance policies that cover a mastectomy also pay for breast reconstruction of your choice, including DIEP flap surgery.
